St. Anthony – Newfoundland's Best Kept Secret

At the tip of Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula, you’ll find St. Anthony. Home to the L’Anse aux Meadows Viking site, it is also a growing town offering natural wonders, a rich history, and traditions that will enchant you.
St. Anthony is the hub of the Great Northern Peninsula. The area is filled to the brim with natural wonders such as a rugged ocean coastline from which to spot whales and icebergs in the distance. In fact, St. Anthony is one of the most accessible places to view icebergs. Starting in late spring and often lasting until mid-summer, massive icebergs are common sightings along the coast - and sometimes they float right into the harbour! St. Anthony also has the longest whale watching season in North America. Take one of the many boat tours so you don't miss this spectacular array of whales, dolphins, porpoises and seals.
Much of St. Anthony’s rich history began in 1892, when a British doctor named Wilfred Grenfell arrived and began to build a medical system that has grown to serve the entire region of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Three historical buildings document and celebrate the impact that Grenfell had on the social, medical and economic climate of the early 1900s. They also depict the evolution of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador over the last 100 years. Begin your visit at the Grenfell Interpretation Centre where you can relive the life and times of Grenfell through a gallery of interpretative displays. View correspondence between Grenfell and American Presidents, British Royalty and even Wilbur & Orville Wright! Be sure to visit Grenfell's longtime residence, Grenfell House. Completed in 1910, it overlooks the harbour, and at the time was referred to as the "castle". After Grenfell's retirement to Vermont, the house became a residence for mission workers, and today, it serves as a public museum. After touring the Grenfell properties, enjoy time to browse Grenfell handicrafts - another tradition that Grenfell helped to preserve. In the early 1900s Grenfell was impressed by the quality of hand-made clothing, rugs and embroidery that was created by housewives in this tiny community. Perhaps you’ll find the perfect souvenir here!
If all this doesn’t tempt you to visit St. Anthony, perhaps a traditional “screech-in” will. This is a fun-filled ceremony where "come-from-aways" are inducted as official Newfoundlanders. Warning - this ceremony involves Screech Rum and kissing a codfish!
